Providence - Providence #1 - Jamie MacGuire
Sum Up: (Goodreads)
Struggling
with her father's death, Nina meets Jared Ryel, presumably by chance. However
it soon becomes clear that he knows more about her than even close friends.
When her father's former associates begin following her in the dark, Nina
learns that her father was not the man she thought he was, but a thief who
stole from demons. In searching for the truth behind her father's death, she
stumbles upon something she never expected, and something Hell wants, that only
she holds the key for. Jared risks everything to keep the women he was born to
save, by sharing the secret he was sworn to protect.
Plot:
This is
basically how the story starts: Nina is a student at Brown who just lost her
dad. No need to say that she is utterly devastated and her world is about to be turned upside down.
That exact same day she
meets Jared – a 23 year-old guy who tries to cheer her up a little bit. In the
next days, they repeatedly bump into each other as if Fate kept bringing them
together. He is probably the kindest and the most loving person ever (I didn't tell you yet about his smile, did I?)
Anyway, in spite of his exceptional personality,
there seems to be many mysteries surrounding him and he never says a single
thing about himself. Where does his strength come from? How does he constantly
know when Nina is in danger?
When he
decides to share his secret, nothing will be the same for Nina and Jared. More and more questions will come up, leaving the both of them fighting for what they truly want.
Opinion:
First, let
me tell you that I am basically in love with Jamie McGuire’s work (okay, with
Jared too, but who wouldn’t be?). I think she really is a talented writer. All
her books are amazing (even with creepy stalker boyfriends that we come to
love). I loved Beautiful Disaster and I couldn’t stop but falling in love with
this series too. She knows how to write heart-wrenching romance.
I fell in
love with Jared – this amazing guy who suffered Hell (oopsie!) to be able to be
with Nina. He always followed her from far away, never allowed to get near her.
When he does... It’s just amazing! He is so caring and loving and... argh! I’m
basically in love! He is just amazing. And no, he is not creepy! No, he is not
a stalker! He is just very much in love!
I also liked Nina even though she clearly got on my nerves from time to time. She thinks she
is taking good decisions when even the readers know that she is taking a very,
very bad and useless decision (you will understand when you get to that scene).
She can be selfish sometimes but she is also a badass, feisty girl. She is
trying her best not to show how much she is struggling with the life she is now
living since Jared has entered her life.
Nina and
Jared together, they were like a bomb ready to explode. So much sexual tension,
it became funny.
I loved
Beth and Kim – Nina’s best friends. Kim is the grumpy, honest friend while Beth
is more the romantic but very perceptive friend. The whole Ryel family was
incredibly awesome. They were all funny and the mum was just incredibly loving
(now I understand where Jared found this quality).
Now, for
Ryan I am quite confused on how I feel about him. God knows he can be sweet
sometimes but he can also be the worse jerk ever not-really-nice-dude. I
mean, Nina is in a relationship but he is so stupidly stubborn and he
intentionally provokes Jared. He basically has no self-preservation.
So
basically, if you are looking for a true YA romance, this is your book. You
have love, fight, disappointment, sadness, humour, hot guys (this is why we’re
all here, right?). You understand the struggle of every single character: Jared
who has been condemned to watch Nina from far for years and now that she is
here, next to him, he doesn’t want to waste his time. But Nina has never seen
or “met” him before, thus she wants to take her time to get to know him. Crazy
how Jared breathes Nina (nup, I’m not jealous!). Now, go read it!
